Painting a Canon Rangefinder Camera

Updated: Aug 12

Since we often do refinishing and painting of old scopes and binoculars at Optical Repairs, I wanted to see if I could do the same thing to an old crusty looking Canon L1 rangefinder camera.

This camera had corrosion on the body, and parts of the chrome finish was damaged.

I disassembled the body panels off the camera to get all of the necessary parts that require painting. Chrome is also not a good surface for paint to adhere, so it was stripped using some acid. I also used sandpaper and a scourer to roughen up the surface all of the parts and finished by wiping them down with acetone to remove any oils and greases.

After masking, I painted the parts using Duracoat, mixing up white and tan for a cream/ivory colour. This was applied using an airbrush. The door and body panels were painted gloss black colour. Duracoat dries quite quickly, but needs many weeks before it is fully cured. All of the lettering were filled in with a black lacquer stick.

I think it looks quite good.
